Your Safety Matters: Staying Safe in Therapy (Safeguarding)
My Commitment to Your Protection
Your wellbeing is my top priority. This policy explains how I work to keep you safe while respecting your autonomy and confidentiality. It aligns with UK law (including the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005, and GDPR) and BACP ethical guidelines.
Key Principles
✅ Your safety first – I’ll work with you to prevent harm while honoring your choices.
✅ Trauma-informed care – Your experiences will be met with empathy, never judgment.
✅ Clear boundaries – Confidentiality is sacred, but in rare cases where someone is at serious risk, I may need to involve others (I’ll explain this below).
Confidentiality: When Might I Share Information?
What you share is private, but legally and ethically, I must act if:
There’s an immediate risk of serious harm to you or others.
A court orders disclosure (e.g., for legal proceedings).
A child or vulnerable adult is at risk of abuse.
I’ll always:
Discuss it with you first (unless unsafe to do so).
Only share what’s absolutely necessary.
Support you through the process.
Specific Situations
If You’re Experiencing Crisis
Self-harm/suicidal thoughts? We’ll create a collaborative safety plan together.
Only in urgent cases would I contact your GP or emergency services.
[See our full suicide disclosure policy here.]
Disclosures of Abuse or Violence
Domestic/sexual abuse: You’ll be signposted to specialists (e.g., Refuge, Rape Crisis).
Child/vulnerable adult at risk? I’m legally required to report this to safeguarding teams.
Legal Proceedings (Pre-Trial Therapy)
Therapy focuses on emotional support, not evidence-gathering.
Records will be factual and only shared if legally compelled.
Substance Use, Psychosis, or Capacity Concerns
We’ll discuss impacts on your safety and therapy.
If your wellbeing is at risk, I may involve your GP or crisis services.
International Clients
For clients outside the UK:
I’ll research local safeguarding laws and crisis services in your area.
Confidentiality still applies, but legal duties may vary by country.
Between Sessions: Crisis Support
If you need urgent help, please contact:
UK: Samaritans (116 123), NHS 111, or 999 in emergencies.
Internationally: Local crisis helplines or emergency services.
Your Questions Welcome
This way of working is to protect and empower you. If you have concerns or need clarifications, just ask—I’m happy to discuss it anytime.
